04What does OSHA actually require?

29 CFR 1910.151(b)

First aid

Where there is no infirmary, clinic or hospital in near proximity to the workplace, a person or persons must be adequately trained to render first aid [2].

29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)

Bloodborne pathogens

Training at the time of initial assignment and at least annually, at no cost to the employee and during working hours [3].

29 CFR 1910.157(g)(2)

Fire extinguishers

Training upon initial employment and at least annually after that, where staff are expected to use extinguishers [4].

State rules

Schools, gyms, child care

Many states add CPR or AED rules for specific sites. Check AED laws by state before you book.

That is why the bloodborne pathogens and fire extinguisher classes carry a 1-year certificate: the OSHA rule is yearly. CPR and AED cards last 2 years.

The CPR and AED class and the CPR, AED and First Aid class both give a 2-year certification. Bloodborne pathogens and fire extinguisher training give a 1-year certificate. Stop the Bleed gives none.

Does OSHA require CPR training?

OSHA does not name CPR for every workplace. 29 CFR 1910.151(b) requires a person adequately trained to render first aid when no infirmary, clinic or hospital is in near proximity to the workplace, and some OSHA standards for specific work add CPR. The full list is in our guide to OSHA CPR requirements.

Does every employee need CPR training?

No federal rule requires every employee to be trained. The practical target is enough trained people on every shift that someone can start CPR and bring the AED within minutes.
