ZOLL AED Plus vs Defibtech Lifeline: is the ZOLL worth $603 more?

Prices checked 11 October 2026 at AED Leader and Response Ready · FDA-approved (PMA) models only · Every number sourced

Short answer

For most offices, churches and homes, the Defibtech Lifeline ($1,478.80) does the job for $603.20 less, weighs 4.2 lb and carries an 8-year warranty. Pay for the ZOLL AED Plus ($2,082) when rescuers may do long CPR before EMS arrives: only the ZOLL measures compression depth and rate in real time. On a tight budget, a recertified ZOLL AED Plus costs $875.

01Which AED wins for which buyer?

Both are FDA-approved, both are rated against dust and water splashes, and both talk the rescuer through a rescue. The decision comes down to two things: $603.20 on day one, and whether the AED should correct the rescuer's CPR.

03Which one costs less over 5 and 10 years?

The Lifeline, at every point in time. The gap shrinks from $603.20 on day one to $403.50 after ten years, because the Lifeline needs new pads every 2 years while ZOLL pads last 5. The math assumes no rescue (a used pad set is replaced at once) and AED Leader prices from 11 October 2026.

Defibtech Lifeline, semi-automatic, 5-year battery
5 years: $1,478.80 device + 2 pad sets at years 2 and 4 ($150.30) = $1,629.10
10 years: $1,478.80 + 4 pad sets ($300.60) + 1 DBP-1400 battery at year 5 ($229.10) = $2,008.50

ZOLL AED Plus, new
5 years: $2,082 device, pads and batteries included and rated for 5 years = $2,082
10 years: $2,082 + 1 CPR-D-padz ($230) + 1 battery set ($100) at year 5 = $2,412

Cabinet, signage and training cost the same for both and are left out. Run your own numbers in the AED cost calculator. Basics: AED pads explained and AED batteries explained.

The Lifeline's savings come with a calendar. A program owner who misses one 2-year pad date leaves the AED with expired pads; the ZOLL owner has one date every five years. If nobody owns the AED, the $403.50 is the price of that risk.

04Is real-time CPR feedback worth $603?

It is the only feature the Lifeline cannot match. The AHA asks for compressions at least 2 inches (5 cm) deep, no more than 2.4 inches, at 100 to 120 per minute [8]. A metronome can set the rate; only a sensor can tell a rescuer the depth is falling short.

Measures

ZOLL AED Plus

Real CPR Help reads each compression through the CPR-D-padz sensor and responds with prompts such as "Push harder" or "Good compressions" [1]. The rescuer gets correction, not just a beat.

Paces

Defibtech Lifeline

Gives voice prompts and a metronome for CPR pacing [2]. It keeps the rhythm but cannot tell whether each push is deep enough. Charge time is under 9 seconds with a fresh DBP-1400 battery [3].

Where EMS is minutes away, most of the outcome rides on how fast the first shock lands, and the Lifeline does that for less. Where CPR may run through several cycles, such as a large gym or a rural plant, the ZOLL's feedback is the reason to pay more.

05What about the fully automatic versions?

A fully automatic AED delivers the shock itself; the rescuer never presses a button. ZOLL charges nothing extra for it. Defibtech sells it as the Lifeline AUTO for $118.50 more than the semi-automatic Lifeline.

Even fully automatic with the 7-year battery, the Lifeline costs $422.85 less than the ZOLL. Full detail: Defibtech Lifeline review and manual vs automatic AED.

06What about children?

Both treat children under 8 years or 55 lb with dedicated pads. The Lifeline's DDP-200P pads cost $130.25 and deliver 50 J [3]; the ZOLL's Pedi-padz II cost $155 [7]. Neither unit includes child pads, so a school or daycare should add them to the first order.

The recertified ZOLL AED Plus at $875 is the cheapest way into either brand, sold with new pads and battery rated for 5 years. The trade-off is the warranty: 3 years against 8 on a new Lifeline. Details: recertified ZOLL AED Plus and refurbished vs new.
